The Con

What and when?

CHCon is a conference for security professionals and hackers in Christchurch, NZ. Training will be run on Thursday 25th October, and presentations on Friday 26th and Saturday 27th. Badge and locksport challenges will be run throughout the main event. All official conference events will be held at the UCSA Events Centre at 90 Ilam Rd, Riccarton. Be sure to email us if there's something in particular you'd like to see happen at the con!

Who will be speaking/training?

We'll be able to confirm once we've sorted through the CFP and CFT submissions, which are open until Friday 31st August.

Who is it for?

You! IT security professionals, web developers, software developers, students, wannabes, hackers, enthusiasts, [your title here].

Who is running this thing?

CHCon is being coordinated by a collaboration of people from the local ISIG and Women in Tech groups. These are two information technology and security groups which meet regularly in Christchurch. Follow us on Twitter: @CHCon_nz.

How can you support us?

Attend the conference! We'll announce on our Twitter when tickets to both the main event and training are available for purchase. We're also on the look out for sponsors. If you're interested in sponsoring the conference, take a look at the available sponsorship tiers.

Call for Papers

Target Audience: The target audience is primarily technical professionals. It's very likely that attendees will recognise acronyms like SQLi, XSS, CSRF, ROP, RCE, and other such buzzwords. We'll no doubt have people with a range of ability/understanding, although we would prefer technical details where possible.

Session Types: Long, short, or lightning. We plan to have longer talks (45-60 minutes each) interspersed with shorter talks (20-30 minutes each), and a block of lightning talks (each 10 minutes max).

We want to hear from people in the industry who have something to share. Tell us stories of testing pens, tales of that one time "your friend Bob" did that thing, something new you tried out at home/work and how it worked or blew up spectacularly, a project you've started or got involved with that others would benefit from, a demo that works would be a bonus. What we don't want to hear about is the next-gen closed-source metadata slurping product that your company has developed and wants to push upon our fair audience.

Submissions close Friday 31st August.

Session Types: We're looking for half and full day workshops.

Monies: The fixed price per head for training will be $250 for a half-day session and $500 for a whole-day session. Half of this will go to the trainer and half will go to CHCon to help us fund the conference, facilities, and continue to improve the experience for attendees each year. CHCon is not expecting to profit from this.

Call for Events

Hacker cons aren't just about gathering in a room to share the latest and greatest advancements in ISO 27001: they wouldn't be complete without all of the great events included in and surrounding them. It's not often that good stories come from policy meetings, which is where events fill that particular void. If there's a social gathering that you have in mind (like a group dinner or party) or a village or contest you'd like to run (such as a locksport village, physical security challenge or capture the flag) then please get in touch and we'll look at how we can tie it into the con. If you're also able to fund the event, you will be eligable to receive sponsor benefits too (see the CFS section below).

Submissions close Friday 28th September.
